Aram Jibilian, USA "Auto examinations"
A series of photographic work, titled "Auto examinations" that focuses on notions of masculinity and the act of examination.
With so many strict rules on who can and cannot touch whom and when and how, the author finds the licensed physician to have an intriguing power: to manipulate and treat the entire human body, down to the microscopic elements. The usual dynamics of power that define human relationships go through a visual break down in this space; gestures of examination become confused with gestures of affection become confused with gestures of subjection. And when these doctors become patients, the assumed expertise and power over the body, this fragile masculinity, seems to vanish as they too become passive objects of the doctor’s actions.
