{"id":1911,"date":"2018-10-01T11:24:46","date_gmt":"2018-10-01T11:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pinkarmenia.org\/news-events\/homophobes-can-be-jailed-in-switzerland\/"},"modified":"2023-04-26T07:50:46","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T07:50:46","slug":"homophobes-can-be-jailed-in-switzerland","status":"publish","type":"news_events","link":"https:\/\/pinkarmenia.org\/en\/news-events\/homophobes-can-be-jailed-in-switzerland\/","title":{"rendered":"Homophobes can be jailed in Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Switzerland is changing its penal code meaning that people who are homophobic or transphobic toward someone else face the same punishment as if they were racist toward them, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.co.uk\/community\/113493\/switzerland-has-made-homophobia-and-transphobia-illegal-comparing-them-to-racism\/\">Gay Times<\/a>&#8221; reports.<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland\u2019s National Council voted in favor to update the penal code in September 25th, and people who break the law could face up to three years in jail. Still the change is not adopted, as it has to be discussed in\u00a0National Council.<\/p>\n<p>Mathias Reynard, who proposed the law celebrated its success. Posting on Twitter, he wrote: \u201cVictory! By 118 against 60 and 5 abstentions, the National Council accepts my parliamentary initiative against homophobia and Transphobia!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great success for human rights! Final response in December to the Council of States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4683 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pinkarmenia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Mathias-Reynard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Following the vote, Reynard said: \u201cHomophobia is not an opinion.\u00a0It\u2019s a crime.\u00a0One in five homosexuals attempted suicide, half before the age of 20.\u00a0This victory sends a strong signal.\u00a0I have already received hundreds of reactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following Reynard\u2019s victory he confirmed that he plans on introducing marriage equality to Switzerland.
