October 11 is celebrated in many countries as a Coming Out Day.
The concept of ‘coming out’ was first coined in 1869 by German lawyer, journalist and minority rights advocate Karl Ulrichs. He believed that the secret existence of minorities deprived them of having an influence on public opinion, and therefore encouraged homosexual people to be visible by coming out.
‘Coming out’ is an old English phrase, which literally means ‘to come out of the closet’, that is, to disclose themselves.
On the eve of this day, we present a series of letters written to the families in which LGBT people share their feelings, talk about their sexual and gender identities, in other words, they are coming out.
