In Solidarity with Attacked Georgian LGBT Activists

As Georgia, Armenia’s neighbor to the north, celebrates its independence day today, the country’s LGBT community is still reeling from a fresh wave of anti-LGBT violence.

After government officials denied LGBT activists a permit to march on Tbilisi to mark International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) due to safety concerns, 10 LGBT activists attempted to tag the residency of the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church with graffiti art on May 17, 2016. The activists sought to commemorate IDAHOT 2016, as well as remember the 2013 attacks that took place in Tbilisi against an anti-homophobia rally, which was sanctioned and lead by Georgian church leaders.

Plain-clothed police officers forced the activists into cars without identifying themselves, taking them to a police station under arrest. On the same day two of the 10 activists were released. On May 25 several of them were also released by court decision after verbal warning, while the others are still undergoing trial for damaging the view of the city and for resisting the police, even though the police had not identified themselves at the time of the arrest. At the same time, the World Congress of Families was taking place in Tbilisi, an international conference of right-wing Christian, anti-LGBT organizations that, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, is “one of the key driving forces behind the U.S. religious right’s global export of homophobia and sexism.”

Later on May 21, 2016, a member of an ultranationalist conservative group attacked three LGBT activists, including member of LGBT Georgia Beka Gabadadze and member of the Temida, Koba Bitsadze, in central Tbilisi. The man, who was visibly drunk, attempted to rally support and incite violence against the activists from passersby, even threatening to shoot them with a gun. Police arrived quickly at the scene and took the attacker and the activists into custody. Though Georgian law criminalizes discrimination and hate-motivated crimes, the attacker was fine 100 lari (about 50 US dollars) for his actions. He was quoted as citing religious objections for his actions. Meanwhile that same day, two men were attacked in Tbilisi after they were perceived to be gay.  Two of the victims were seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

PINK Armenia stands in full solidarity with Georgia’s LGBT community, and severely condemns all forms of violence enacted against community members and activists. We are very concerned by the situation in Georgia, and wish to express our full support to all peaceful sections of society who struggle for equality, democracy, and human rights protection. LGBT Georgians deserve to live lives free from violence, in security, and without shame, lives equal in dignity and value to all other Georgians.

სოლიდარობა საქართველოში დაზარალებულ ლგბტ აქტივისტებს

დღეს საქართველო აღნიშნავს თავის დამოუკიდებლობის დღეს, ხოლო ლგბტ თემი საქართველოში განიცდის ძალადობის ახალ ტალღას ლგბტ თემის წინააღმდეგ.

მას შემდეგ, რაც ხელისუფლებამ უარი თქვა დაეცვა ლგბტ აქტივისტების გამოხატვის თავისუფლება  17 მაისს ჰომოფობიასა და ტრანსფობიასთან ბრძოლის საერთაშორისო დღის აღსანიშნავად (IDAHOT), 10-მდე ლგბტ აქტივისტმა სცადეს ქალაქში, მათ შორის საპატრიარქოს შენობაზე გრაფიტის გაკეთება.

აქტივისტები ცდილობდნენ აღენიშნათ IDAHOT 2016, და გაეხსენათ 2013 წლის მღვდლების წინამღოლობით ორგანიზებული თავდასხა ჰომოფობიის საწინააღმდეგო ღონისძიებაზე თბილისის ცენტრში. სამოქალაქო ტანსაცმელში გამოწყობილმა პოლიციელებმა დააკავეს და ძალით ჩასვეს ლგბტ აქტივისტები მანქანებში და გადაიყვანეს პოლიციის განყოფილებაში. იმავე დღეს 10-იდან 2 აქტივისტი გაანთავისუფლეს. 25 მაისს კიდე რამოდენიმე აქტივისტი განთავისუფლდა სასამართლო გადაწყვეტილებით და სიტყვიერი გაფრთხილებით. დანარჩენების საქმე ჯერ კიდევ განიხილება სასამართლოს მიერ, მათ ბრალად ედებათ ქალაქის იერ-სახის დამახინჯება და პოლიციისთვის არდამორჩიელება.

იმავე დროს, თბილისში „მსოფლიო ოჯახთა კონგრესი“ ჩატარდა – რომელიც არის მემარჯვენე ქრისტიანთა და ლგბტ წინააღდეგი ორგანიზაციების საერთაშორისო კონფერენცია.

21 მაისს, ულტრანიონალური კონსერვატიული ჯგუფის წევრი, თბილისის ცენტრში თავს დაესხა 3 ლგბტ აქტივისტს, მათ შორის ლგბტ საქართველოს გამგეობის თავმჯდომარეს ბექა გაბადაძესა და ლგბტი ორგანიზაცია თემიდას დამფუძნებელ წევრ კობა ბიწაძეს.

მამაკაცი, რომელიც სავარაუდოდ იმყოფებოდა არაფხიზელ მდგომარეობაში, შეეცადა გამვლელების მხრიდან მიეღო მხარდაჭერა და წაექეზებინა ძალადობა, ბოლოს კი დაემუქრა აქტივისტებს იარაღის გამოყენებით.

პოლიცია მალევე მივიდა ადგილზე და გადაიყვანა თავდამსხმელი და აქტივისტები განყოფილებაში განმარტებებისათვის. იმისდამიუხედავად რომ საქართველოს კანონმდებლობით დისკრიმინაცია და სიძულვილით მოტივირებული დანაშაული დასჯადია, თავდამსხმელმა თავისი ქმედებებისათვის მიიღო მხოლოდ 100 ლარიანი ჯარიმა. თავის ქმედებების გასამართლებლად იგი იყენებდა რელიგიურ ფრაზებსა და რელიგიურ მოტივებს.

იმავე დღეს, 2 მამაკაცს თავს დაესხნენ თბილისში როდესაც იეჭვეს რომ გეები არიან. 3 თავდამსხმელმა ცემის გარდა, რამოდენიმე ჯერ დაჭრეს დაზარალებულები დანით, რომლებიც შემდგომ სერიოზული ჭრილობებით გადაიყვანეს საავადმყოფოში. 

ფინქ არმენია (PINK Armenia) სოლიდარობას უცხადებს საქართველოს ლგბტ ტემსა და სასტიკად გმობს ყველა სახის ძალადობას ლგბტ თემის წევრების და აქტივისტების მიმართ.  

აგრეთვე გვინდა ჩვენი მხარდაჯერა გამოვუცხადოთ სამოქალაქო საზოგადოების იმ მშვიდობიან ჯგუფებს, რომლებიც იბრძვიან თანასწორობის, დემოკრატიისა და ადამიანის უფლებების დასაცავად. საქართველოს ლგბტ ადამინებმა უნდა იცხოვრონ ძალადობის გარეშე, უსაფრთხო გარემოში და სირცხვილის გარეშე: ღირსეული ცხოვრება უნდა იყოს საქართველოს ყოველ მაცხოვრებლისათვის.
