Award Ceremony: Spirit of the LGBT+ Movement 2024
On October 26, the “Spirit of the LGBT+ Movement” award ceremony took place once again in Yerevan, aimed at celebrating and expressing gratitude to LGBT+ people and allies who have made significant contributions to the community in recent years.
The award was established years ago by the “Community for Community” initiative, thanks to which Pink’s beneficiaries and volunteers have supported one another, celebrated successes, and brought about positive changes within the community.
Since October is LGBT+ History Month, the day offered an excellent opportunity to discuss significant past events and celebrate present achievements. During the event, a short discussion was organized to reflect on activist stories and the milestones that have helped establish the LGBT+ movement as it stands today.
Inspiring speeches were then given by prominent figures, including the modern writer Armen of Armenia, Siran Hovhannisyan of the Women’s Fund, Anush Gabrielyan from the Sexual Violence Crisis Center, and drag artist Gigi Aries.
From the 10 nominees put forth by the community and allies, two were selected by the jury to receive the “Spirit of the LGBT+ Movement” award.
One recipient of the 2024 award is social worker and helping specialist, Anush Gabrielyan, honored for her boundless courage and resilience. She dedicates her resources and efforts to create a safer environment for the community and for those who often turn to her in their most challenging times.
Popular drag artist Gigi Aries was also awarded the Spirit of the LGBT+ Movement award. Drag culture and drag artists play a vital role in the LGBT+ movement, serving not only as a means of artistic freedom but also as tools for challenging societal stereotypes, fostering community strength, and promoting self-affirmation. Gigi has a crucial role in showcasing diverse identities, raising the visibility of LGBT+ community, and advancing queer art and activism.
This award stands as a symbol of our gratitude and admiration for these individuals and their work.
